Residence Life offers a variety of summer employment options for the RISD student population. All positions are available to currently enrolled, non-graduating undergraduate and graduate students. Students must be enrolled for the fall semester to be eligible.

It is highly encouraged that you carefully review the job descriptions below to make an informed decision on which job may be right for you. Each position comes with a different compensation package.

Please note that no student may work more than 40 hours per week combined across all on campus jobs.

General Eligibility Requirements
  1. Enrolled RISD student for 2023-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years.
  2. Maintain a 2.5 GPA
  3. Successfully complete an HR administered background check.
  4. Adhere to the RISD Code of Conduct
Summer Positions
Pre-College Resident Advisor (PC RA)

  • Overview: Pre-College Resident Advisors (PCRAs) play an important role in shaping the overall experience of Pre-College participants. At the core of the Pre-College RA role is to build authentic, positive, and appropriate relationships with each resident while maintaining boundaries. Acting as educator, community leader, role model, and policy enforcer, RAs have a large impact on the experience of Pre-College participants.
  • Compensation: Single room, full meal plan; opportunities exist for hourly pay for additional tasks specific to the Pre-College RA role. Please see job description for an outline of these opportunities. The additional opportunities are compensated at $14.00/hour. (Note: Regular Pre-College RA duties do not contribute to the 40 hour work week maximum, however, hourly paid compensation opportunities do contribute to the 40 hour work week maximum.)

Summer Office Assistant

  • Overview: The Residence Life Office provides opportunities for all students to develop personally, socially, and intellectually. The RLO Office Assistant represents the Residence Life Office when greeting visitors, answering phones, checking and responding to email, taking messages, and solving problems for students, including minors in the Precollege program, and parents. Must be responsible, with strong attention to detail, and must be able to interact with visitors and staff effectively. Formal training sessions are offered by the professional staff and attendance at these events is mandatory for students who hold this position.

Big Muscles

  • Overview: Big Muscles are student workers who are hired specifically for the summer months to assist with deliveries from Jones Moving & Storage. Over the course of the summer, Big Muscles will be responsible for meeting Jones movers, letting them into residence halls to deliver boxes to students’ rooms and keeping in close contact with the Residence Life Department Operations and Communications Coordinator. This is a physical role that requires students to have a familiarity with RISD’s campus and ability to walk around campus in a timely manner. This position will not require lifting boxes.
