RISD Residence Life provides a community for students to thrive and develop personally and artistically. Given the rigor of the Experimental and Foundation Studies and the newness of second year in one’s major, all 1st and 2nd year students are required to live on campus.
Students can request a waiver for this requirement if they meet one of the following qualifications:
- Student is married (a valid marriage certification will be required)
- Student is over 21 years of age or older prior to the start of Fall semester
- Student is living at home home with a parent or legal guardian*
*Students who indicate that they are living at home with a legal parent or guardian are subject to being asked to provide one of the following:
- Proof of Residency with the student’s legal parent or guardian’s name on it (one of the following)
- A copy of your lease
- A letter from your ladlord or leasing company on company letterhead stating that the legal parent or guardian is the primary tenant on the lease
- A mortgage statement
- Utility, property tax, home insurance, etc. bill
- Driver’s License
OR
- A signed and notarized letter from the student’s legal parent or guardian that indicates that their student will reside with them. The letter must also include the following:
- The local address of where the student will be residing with their legal parent or guardian
- Parent email address
- Parent phone number
How to Submit A Residency Requirement Waiver
Students can find the form on the Student Life Portal and following these instructions:
- Select “Housing Forms”
- Select the academic year term for the upcoming year
- Select “Residency Requirement Waiver” from the drop down menu
